Whether you are seeking basic lawn care or just need results, the traditional program will deliver. Our commercial programs are customized to fit the budget and desires of the individual client. These programs generally use the typical synthetic lawn care materials that are tried and true. At Valley, we listen to your needs and create a working plan for manicured areas as well as open space. We will provide you with a custom step program that takes into account grass variety, usage, amount of sun or shade and existing conditions garnered from soil testing to understand what nutrients are necessary to deliver results while not using more material than necessary.
Behind us are many professional resources from the Golf and Turf industries as well as academia. We use the best products for your conditions based on experience and guidance from our suppliers. Naturally, Valley Outdoor Design, LLC participates in continuing education from manufacturers, distributors and state agencies for safe handling and the environment. We are a licensed Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator and follow all EPA and state regulations as directed by MDAR.

Trust the lawn care professionals for all your needs
At Valley Outdoor Design, LLC we are passionate about best industry practices and leading edge technologies coming together in a package that provides an environmentally responsible lawn care program for our clients that combine traditional and organic products to deliver on the best characteristics of both worlds while also on budget.
Additionally, this program uses Integrated Pest Management, IPM principles to minimize the use of traditional products but may include some due to cost or performance.
Once again, this is all based on rigorous soil testing science that is reviewed with our client to ensure that we are both in lock step with our shared strategies.

A beautiful lawn can be yours while being environmentally conscious about the decisions being made by your business or association whether you want to eliminate synthetic chemicals from your environment due to residents with existing auto-immune conditions or you are just concerned for the health of children and pets on your property, we can create the right program for your needs.
We have extensive experience with large properties here in the West Newbury, MA area in close proximity to municipal water supplies with deeded restrictions and waterfront locations. Our programs include state and university recognized Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, fertilizers from natural sources with a high percentage of (WIN) or Water Insoluble Nutrients, NO sludge with high metals content, NO Phosphorus, only OMRI certified products and natural alternatives to chemical based pesticides such as organic corn gluten based preemergent targeting crabgrass among many other natural treatments.
It all starts with the soil and just like other methods, Organic lawn care programs rely on soil testing to determine what actions are necessary to improve or maintain existing conditions in the landscape.
Other aspects of this program will rely on changes in cultural practices such as cutting to a higher blade length to block out the sun and choke out weeds, Soil pH, ensuring that watering is deep and infrequent, IPM is used to avoid using more harsh treatments, use of beneficial nematodes in the soil and well as beneficial insects and bio-insecticides to treat many conditions including Grub infestation in a people, pet and pollinator safe manner.
Many products used will overlap between OMRI and NOFA certification and therefore are acceptable near food crops as well as turf so are considered the safest available. We utilize manufacturers from all across the USA, Canada (which is all organic lawn care) and Europe to source our well researched products for these programs since only the best will do
Organic programs require an investment time, energy and budget from the client, property manager and the full service landscape or lawn care professional as well as a road map of how to achieve the client's desired goals.

Controlling many insects are no longer a challenge with safe and effective natural treatments

Lawn results start with the soil. We deliver results through gathering field samples and sending them to a lab for nutrient analysis. Once we have the results of the desired analysis back we then review them with our client and develop a roadmap to success. This is done when your account is established and at three year intervals and is also available to residential clients.
After a consultation we will determine the appropriate method to establish a new lawn for your project and conditions. Lawn installation often requires grading fresh topsoil to correct drainage problems or to simply set a slope from a building or other landscape elements.
Our service includes many of the individual lawn services we offer such as dethatching, aeration, overseeding and topdressing but bundled for you and done in the correct order then raked and rolled for the most impactful and quickest improvement possible for a lawn without a complete rip and replacement being done. Prices vary based on steps necessary and square footage. Check out our article on our Lawn Renovation Process for more insight into this wonderful way to pamper your property!
Sustainable landscaping - Micro-Clover, No-Mow Lawns and Wildflower Meadows
Recommended as a yearly practice for good lawn care, Dethatching is traditionally done in the spring by many but can be done at any time, especially late summer into the fall when annual weeds have scaled back growth, lawns are on the rebound from lack of water and heat stress with less competition from creating space between the healthy blades of grass. We use this process of "hard raking" by machine to clear out as much dead material in the thatch layer as possible to allow the sun, heat and water to help with any germination from overseeding or added nutrients from Compost or fertilizer. Contact us if you would like a custom quote for this service.
Core Aeration is the preferred method of breaking up soil to allow for the exchange of air and gasses within the soil while allowing seed or nutrients from compost or fertilizers to enter the soil. If done yearly, this routine will improve your stand of turf in the Merrimac, MA area and can be used with gypsum treatments to break up heavy loam or clay in the soil over time.
Usually used in combination with Core Aeration, we use this underrated tool in the Landscaper's toolbox to thicken and repair lawns as well as a way to slowly add or change the composition of a lawn's grass cultivars to better suit its micro climate, sun/shade exposure, desired level of effort to maintain or expected usage. As us for a free consultation to see if this would benefit your lawn.
It has been said that adding compost to your soil is like getting a blood transfusion, breathing new life into an old lawn and we couldn't agree more! The traditional method of topdressing was to use a shovel and "fling" the material at the lawn then work it with hand tools but we have evolved. The modern way of applying a topdressing of organic compost is to use a specialized topdressing machine to mechanize the process of spreading the compost over the lawn. At Valley Outdoor Design, LLC we have the right tools and knowledge to make the job go smoothly. Schedule an appointment with our lawn care specialists for a no cost consultation and put our "Outdoor Passion" to work for you!
At Valley Outdoor Design, our lawn care programs are customized to be as little or as much as desired based on soil testing or available budget. We have experience handling every situation from single family homes to the largest HOA developments in the Amesbury, MA area. We specialize in organic lawn care programs that are bird and bee (pollinator) safe, and use best practices to minimize the use of any chemicals only when necessary. Based on university research over a number of years we are now offering compost tea as an all natural foliar and soil drench application that has been custom brewed using only the best ingredients such as Fish Emulsion, North Atlantic Kelp and Humic Acid on a limited basis. Contact us to learn more about about this Compost Tea and what we can do for your property.
Lime is a soil amendment that is the primary way of changing a soil's pH or acid-alkaline balance and can be added to your lawn or garden beds at any time during the season though many use a fall application as a baseline. We like to use a spring/fall schedule of lawn applications here in the Newburyport, MA area since our soil is so acidic. Depending on soil testing results we may use Dolomite Lime or Fast Acting Hi-Calcium Lime combined with Humic Acid to help build the soil structures. We also have the ability to spray liquid lime when it is necessary to change the soil pH in short order when necessary or if we are tank mixing for Hydroseeding. Other soil treatments are available.
